How to Participate in National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in Indiana

November 21, 2024Elder Law

National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, observed every November, is the perfect time to raise awareness about a disease that affects millions of individuals and their families across the United States. As the population in the United States ages, Alzheimer’s has become an increasing concern, making it crucial y to understand the disease and the impact it has on individuals, families, and the community. With that in mind, the Indianapolis attorneys at Frank & Kraft discuss how you can participate in National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month this November in Indiana.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a condition characterized by a decline in cognitive abilities, memory loss, and changes in behavior. is Because Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, the symptoms worsen over time, eventually leading to severe impairment for someone suffering with the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 110,000 Hoosiers aged 65 and older are living with the disease and that number is expected to increase in the years to come. Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease not only affects the individuals diagnosed with it, but it also impacts their families and caregivers who provide day-to-day support.

The Importance of Early Detection

National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month encourages early detection, which can significantly impact the course of the disease. Recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer’s, such as forgetfulness, confusion, and difficulty with routine tasks, can lead to a timely diagnosis and the opportunity to explore treatment options that may slow the disease’s progression and allow individuals and their families time to prepare for the future. If you are concerned that you or a loved one is showing signs of Alzheimer’s, arrange for a checkup with you primary care physician, schedule a memory screening, or arrange for an evaluation by a specialist this November.

The Role of Caregivers

In Indiana, thousands of family members take on the responsibility of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s, often providing emotional, physical, and financial support. National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month provides the opportunity to acknowledge the tireless work of these caregivers who play such an essential role in the lives of those with Alzheimer’s disease. Given the demands placed on them, it should come as no surprise that caregivers often experience significant stress and burnout. In Indiana, organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association Indiana Chapter offer a wide range of support services designed specifically for caregivers, including educational workshops, counseling, and respite care assistance.

Planning for the Future

One of the most important steps individuals and families can take when faced with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is planning for the future. Because Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, cognitive abilities decline, meaning that individuals suffering with the disease may become unable to make their own decisions regarding healthcare, finances, and legal matters. National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month is an excellent time to focus on the need for advance planning which should include creating or updating an estate plan. Estate planning allows individuals to express their wishes regarding medical care, appoint someone to make decisions on their behalf, and ensure their assets are distributed according to their preferences. Planning for the high cost of long-term care should also be part of planning for the future. For many people, that means incorporating a Medicaid planning component into a comprehensive estate plan.

Raising Awareness in Indiana

Each year, the Alzheimer’s Association and other advocacy groups use November as a time to emphasize the importance of funding Alzheimer’s research and supporting legislation that aids patients and caregivers.  National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month serves as a platform to increase public understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, advocate for those affected, and promote research into potential treatments and a cure. In Indiana, communities can participate by supporting local Alzheimer’s organizations, participating in fundraising events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and engaging in educational programs designed to raise awareness.
